Key Mantras
Panchakshara Mantra
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Om Namah Shivaya
I bow to Lord Shiva - the consciousness that dwells within all.
The most sacred Shiva mantra. "Na" = earth, "Ma" = water, "Shi" = fire, "Va" = air, "Ya" = ether. Chanting this mantra purifies the five elements within the body.
Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्।।
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat
We worship Shiva - the three-eyed one who is fragrant and who nourishes all beings. May He liberate us from the bondage of worldly attachment and death, just as a cucumber is severed from its vine. Grant us immortality, not death.
One of the most powerful mantras in the Rigveda (7.59.12). Chanted for healing, protection, and liberation from the fear of death. Known as the Mrita-Sanjivini mantra.
Rudra Gayatri
ॐ तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे महादेवाय धीमहि। तन्नो रुद्रः प्रचोदयात्।।
Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe Mahadevaya Dhimahi Tanno Rudrah Prachodayat
Om, let us contemplate the supreme Purusha. Let us meditate on the great Mahadeva. May Rudra enlighten and inspire our intellect.
The Gayatri mantra dedicated to Lord Shiva. Meditating on Shiva as the ultimate Purusha (consciousness), asking for illumination of the mind.
Shiva Panchakshara Stotram (first verse)
नागेन्द्रहाराय त्रिलोचनाय भस्माङ्गरागाय महेश्वराय। नित्याय शुद्धाय दिगम्बराय तस्मै न काराय नमः शिवाय।।
Nagendraharaya Trilochanaya Bhasmangaragaya Maheshwaraya Nityaya Shuddhaya Digambaraya Tasmai Na-karaya Namah Shivaya
To Shiva who wears the king of serpents as a garland, who has three eyes, who is smeared with sacred ash, who is the great Lord - the eternal, the pure, the sky-clad - I bow to that Shiva, represented by the syllable 'Na'.
A celebrated Sanskrit stotra by Adi Shankaracharya, with each of the 5 verses expounding one syllable of Om Namah Shivaya.
